During Summer 2021, Y5 and 6 entered a poetry recital competition. Each class selected a poem which they explored and analysed. We also watched poets reciting them and thought about the feelings they evoked. We then tried out different methods of memorising them ranging from acting out specific parts, illustrating selected lines and visualising what was happening. Every single child was able to memorise part of their poem and explain which technique they preferred. It was very impressive, everyone made a tremendous effort!
We had class heats, followed by year group finals. A select judging panel of Mr Donaldson and Mrs Leney listened to final entries and selected 5 from each year group to enter into the final phase of the competition.
Then we waited......
In September, we were given the amazing news that 3 of our former Y6 pupils had been awarded joint first and second prizes in their age category. We will be awarding them with their prizes and certificates after November. All the children who entered were given a certificate and appraisal of the poem, written by the judges, who were very impressed by the high standard of entries. A huge well done to Alex, Daisy, Ava, Lilly, Jake, Dorothy and Elyssia, Emily, Laura and Olly.
You can see the winning performances below, as well as the judges comments. We will add pictures after they have collected the awards. In addition, the school library was presented with a £60 voucher, which will be spend on poetry books to enthuse, inspire and engage all of the children who visit the library.
