Poetry Recital Competition 2021

Memorising and Reciting Poetry winners!

In Summer 2021, Y5&6 took part in a poetry recital project and competition, which was organised by Bristol University and Brigstow institute. Each class selected a poem, explored the meaning behind it and tried out different techniques to memorise it. Everyone was able to memorise part, or all, of a poem and enjoyed trying out the different memorisation strategies. The children performed their poems in class; the standard was incredibly high and we were proud of everyone who took part. From these heats, we selected 2 performances from each class to go into a year group final. These performances were judged by Mr Donaldson and Mrs Leney and 5 entries from each year group were submitted to ‘Bristol by Heart’ to be judged by a range of people involved in the project.

In Autumn, we were notified that 3 of our Y6 children from last year had won their category! We were delighted to welcome them back to Ashton Gate recently to collect their prizes and certificates. We know that the whole school community would like to celebrate their success. You can watch their recorded performances by clicking on the links below. In addition, the school was also awarded £60 of book vouchers. Our KS2 librarians have selected some poetry books for the library, which can be read by everyone. We send huge congratulations to Emily, Laura and Olly; an amazing achievement!
