PSHE and RSHE
PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) and RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education) is learning how to stay healthy, safe, and happy, build respectful relationships, understand how our bodies and feelings change as we grow, and make responsible choices for ourselves and others.
At Ashton Gate, we want all pupils to grow into healthy, confident, and responsible individuals who feel connected to the world around them. Our PSHE curriculum helps children understand themselves, build positive relationships, and take an active role in school and community life.
Through engaging lessons, pupils explore how to care for themselves, others, and the environment — developing key life skills and the confidence to thrive in a changing world. They learn about equality, rights, and responsibilities, gaining an appreciation of what it means to be a valued member of a diverse society.
We aim for every child to leave Ashton Gate with the knowledge, understanding, and attitudes they need to make informed choices, feel empowered, and contribute positively to the world.
For associated documents and policies which refer to aspects of the PSHE curriculum and the well-being of children, please visit the separate Policies page found in Key Information.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSHE) and Health Education
Health Education and Relationships Education became statutory in all primary schools in England from September 2020.
The objective of Relationships and Sex Education is to help and support young people through their physical, emotional and moral development. RSHE will promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils in our school and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. Pupils will be encouraged to talk openly and asks questions which will be answered age appropriately and honestly, in a way that respects diversity of cultures and family forms.
We aim to ensure that pupils:
-
develop confidence in talking, listening and thinking about feelings and relationships.
-
develop their self-esteem and sense of responsibility and self-worth.
-
are able to name parts of the body and describe how their bodies work.
-
can protect themselves and ask for help and support.
-
are prepared for puberty.
The complete national guidance can be found here.
Relationships Education
Relationships Education will put in place the building blocks needed for positive and safe relationships, including with family, friends and online. Your child will be taught what a relationship is, what friendship is, what family means and who can support them. In an age appropriate way, we will cover how to treat each other with kindness, consideration and respect.
By the end of primary school, your child will have been taught content on:
-
Families and people who care for me
-
Caring friendships
-
Respectful relationships
-
Online relationships
-

Sex Education
We believe that pupils should be given the opportunity to access a curriculum which prepares them for the changes that adolescence brings. At Ashton Gate, we are choosing to provide our pupils with a sensitive, age appropriate curriculum which includes the components of Sex Education.
Our aims:
-
To prepare pupils for the changes that occur to their bodies, minds and emotions as a consequence of growth from childhood to adulthood.
-
To help support young people through spiritual, physical, emotional and moral development.
-
To work in partnership with parents, families and the wider community to promote positive relationships and provide effective support for young people.
For further details of what is taught at each year group during our RSE programme, please see the document below.
Our RSE scheme of work is taken from 'Growing up with Yasmine and Tom'. Please visit their website for more information.
Right to withdraw
Parents and carers continue to have the right to withdraw their child from Sex Education, but not Relationships or Health Education.
For more information, a useful guide to RSE for parents can be found at RSE FAQs For Parents
Monitor and review
As a school we continuously review and update our RSE curriculum as part of our general PSHE programme of study.
At Ashton Gate we regularly gain pupil and parent voice to guide current and future planning. Latest consultations carried out in July 2021 and May 2022.
School Council - Pupil Voice
Children at Ashton Gate are encouraged to be part of school's decisions to improve and share their views. This is done through School Council. Please see the link below for further information.
