Awesome Art Challenges!

Looking for a creative challenge?

Why not take part in The Great Big Art Exhibition.

The first theme is animals and you are being asked to create an animal artwork to display in your window or front garden. Sculptor Anthony Gormley, who designed the Angel of the North, has put together a short guide to making animal models out of clay, but children can make anything they like on an animal theme. There are loads of other fantastic artists and galleries signed up to help inspire you.

The idea builds on all the rainbow art people were showing in windows over the first lockdown and all the different things people create will form part of a massive national art exhibition. Once your artwork is ready, please send a photo of it to your class teacher, so we can include it in our virtual gallery.

Families can also share artwork through social media as part of the national exhibition. Use the hashtag #thegreatbigartexhibition2021 and tag the following handles:

Facebook: @firstsite

Twitter: @firstsite

Instagram: @firstsitecolchester

When sharing, please include your name, the city where you live and a short, one line description of your artwork.

If you are interested in drawing animals, check out some of the videos below. There are tutorials on how to draw an elephant, a giraffe, an octopus, a squid, a jellyfish, fish and unicorn, dragons and many more. If you would like tutorials on any animals please email Mr Donaldson at alistair.donaldson@bristol-schools.uk as he is taking requests.

Often, when we do pictures and art work, it's tempting to try and get it done as quickly as possible. These challenges, although shown in very quick videos, are the opposite. It's a chance for you to really take your time and produce something that you are really proud of. It doesn't need to be done all in one go, you could produce a picture over many days - in 10 minute sections, half an hour sections and so on. Whatever suits you.

I would love to see some of the work produced so please feel free to upload some photos to me at

alistair.donaldson@bristol-schools.uk  and I'll share some images on this page. Good luck and enjoy the creative process.
